The 42 day detention proposals in the Counter-Terrorism Bill were passed narrowly in the House of Commons on 11 June 2008 (by 315 votes to 306)
However, after an overwhelming defeat in the House of Lords on 12 October 2008, the Government eventually abandoned the dangerous and unnecessary measure.
