Liberty - Protecting civil liberties, promoting human rights

No Torture No Compromise

International and domestic human rights law absolutely prohibits the use of torture or inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

Yet during the ‘War on Terror’ our Government attempted to sidestep, ignore and undermine our legal and moral obligations to prevent torture.

Liberty believes that by involving ourselves in torture we make a mockery of our status as a civilised country and we lose any ability to press other countries to respect human rights.

There is no room for compromise on the question of torture. Our No Torture No Compromise campaign has repeatedly challenged the Government, raised public awareness of possible UK complicity in torture, and called for an independent inquiry into the issue.
