  • LEAVE A LEGACY

  • Hunger March in Hyde Park, 1934

Liberty was founded in response to police provocation at the hunger marches of the 1930s. For nearly 75 years we have been the 'conscience of the nation'.

We can't see where the next threat to our rights and freedoms will come from, but with your support we can be sure that Liberty will be there to defend them.

By considering leaving a gift to Liberty in your Will, you can help to protect human rights for generations to come.

Liberty members and the National Free Wills Network

During 2008 we are offering our members the chance to leave a lasting legacy to Liberty in the simplest way possible.

Thanks to Liberty’s membership of the National Free Wills Network you can have a simple Will written by a solicitor in your area, completely free of charge. As a member of the Network, Liberty pays a discounted rate. There is no obligation to leave a legacy to Liberty in doing so, but we hope you would feel able to.

    How does it work?

If you are already a Liberty member, you can apply to the National Free Wills Network by contacting us using the details below. If you are not yet a member of Liberty, find out how you can join us now.

After applying, you will get a letter from the National Free Wills Network with a list of participating solicitors in your area and a voucher that is valid for 60 days, so you have up to two months to make an appointment with your preferred solicitor. Then they will help you draw up your Will free of charge.

Any gift you choose to give to us will be in the name of the Civil Liberties Trust, Liberty’s charitable sister organisation. Once you have drawn up your Will, your chosen solicitor will simply contact us to confirm that your voucher has been used.

What kind of gift can I leave?

There are three main types of legacy:

Specific - A particular item is left, such as a house or area of land.

Pecuniary - A specific sum of money is pledged. This is affected by inflation so the original gift may decrease in value.

Residual - A gift of all or part of an estate after all other conditions of the Will have been met. Residual legacies are particularly valuable as they grow with inflation.
