Liberty advice volunteers win top award
Volunteers from Liberty's advice service were named 'Pro Bono Activity of the Year' at 'The Lawyer' Awards last night.
The volunteers, who are student members of the Human Rights Unit at BPP
Law School take part in letters clinics at Liberty. They help answer the
thousands of letters calling for human rights and civil liberties
advice that we receive each year. The project was praised by the judges
for the "practical way students can contribute in a useful way which
prepares them for pro bono contribution throughout their careers. An
imaginative scheme, well thought through". Commenting on the Award
Kara
Irwin, BPP Pro Bono Director:“We are really pleased to have won this
award and are hoping that it spurs even more law students and lawyers to
join our work and to support Liberty."
Nicole Chrolavicius,
co-ordinator of Liberty's letters clinic: "The BPP students have made a
tremendous contribution to Liberty's advice service work and we are
delighted that the project has been recognised by the legal community.
We hope that this recognition of the value of pro bono work will
encourage law students and law firms alike to foster and develop their
commitments to community groups and projects such as ours."
