Liberty Director Shami Chakrabarti calls Government’s counter-terror proposals an “international embarrassment”

7 April 2008
Liberty’s Director Shami Chakrabarti will tell the Foreign Press Association that controversial measures in the Government’s Counter-Terrorism bill will undermine Britain’s international reputation as a country which respects the rule of law.
Proposals to extend pre-charge detention periods from 28 to 42 days for terror suspects will be counter-productive, according to Liberty, and will damage relations between minority communities and the police that are vital in dealing with the terror threat. Liberty has instead called for reasonable alternatives such as the use of post-charge questioning and allowing phone-tap evidence to be used in criminal prosecutions.
Liberty Director Shami Chakrabarti said:
“The Government has abandoned the divisive rhetoric of the ‘War on Terror’, but it must now abandon the counter-productive policies that went with it. Holding suspects for more than a month without charge would be an international embarrassment.”
