Victory for open justice - Lib Dem Conference rejects secret courts

25 September 2012
Today Jo Shaw’s principled motion against the secret courts proposals in the Justice and Security Bill was passed at the Lib Dem conference.

Despite an amendment drafted by government advisers which would have completely emasculated it, Lib Dem members successfully voted through the original motion which called on their MPs and peers to "press for the withdrawal or defeat" of the controversial Bill.

Shami Chakrabarti, Director of Liberty said:

“It is a significant victory for open justice that the Lib Dem conference has overwhelmingly rejected secret courts under the Coalition's Justice and Security Bill. Liberty fully expects the party in Westminster to vote accordingly alongside Conservative rebels and Her Majesty's opposition.”
