You’ve had a horrible day at work, it’s pouring with rain, and you get in to a pile of washing up the size of Mt Everest and nothing in the fridge but a stick of celery and some cheese that has definitely seen better days. The last thing on your mind is battling to protect our hard-won rights and freedoms (especially on an empty stomach).
That’s why we’ve made this little list of simple things you can do that will only take a few moments of your time but will help us to make a big difference.
1. Sign our petition to end control orders
Control orders involve indefinite
punishment (e.g. house arrest and internal exile) without trial – if you were
placed under a control order you might never know the accusation against you and
never have the chance to clear your name. Please add your voice to the call for
the scheme to be scrapped.
2. Send your MP a quick email about pre-charge detention
Ask your MP to call for a reduction
in the pre-charge detention limit and pass on your concerns to their party
leadership and the Home Secretary. Let them know that 28 days pre-charge
detention is unjust, unnecessary, and doesn’t make us
3. Order a free Common Values poster
Our A2 poster (view as PDF) asks “What’s not to love?” about the Human Rights Act and lists the fundamental freedoms it protects. Why not order a poster to put up (with permission!) in your school, college, student union, library, local cafe or community centre?
4. Send a message of support for Gary McKinnon
Gary McKinnon is currently facing extradition to America. His lawyers believe he should be tried here in the UK. Find out more about his case and send him a quick message of support.
5. Add a Liberty twibbon to your profile picture
