Last Saturday saw Liberty’s independent legal observers out in force again, this time at the request of family members of Smiley Culture, the reggae star who died during a police raid on his house in March this year.
Peaceful but purposeful the protesters were united in their calls for an investigation into the singer’s untimely death.
As they wound their way through the capital both protesters and police conducted themselves with dignity and restraint. Officers were dressed in ordinary uniform and remained at the sidelines of the march giving demonstrators the freedom to voice their calls for justice.
The march culminated in a moving rally outside New Scotland Yard as family members of Smiley Culture addressed an attentive crowd. We were heartened to see this powerful expression of peaceful dissent proceed without incident and hope the family and their supporters get the answers they so urgently need.
