Halloween Spooktacular

It seems apt that the Home Secretary, Theresa May, gave evidence to the Draft Communications Data Bill Committee on today of all days; Halloween. The "spooktacular" that is the Snoopers’ Charter deserves a place on any good Halloween line-up - containing, as it does, frightening proposals to stockpile large amounts of communications data indiscriminately; amounting to blanket surveillance of the whole country.

We need to remind the Government that we’re a nation of citizens not suspects.

Over the past months Liberty, with the help of our supporters, has been ramping up the pressure to quash this draft bill. Our campaign message has appeared in the national media over 500 times and we have submitted expert oral and written evidence to parliamentary committees. We’ve secured public statements against the measures at all three main party conferences and more than a thousand Liberty members have written to their MPs.

In addition, we have just launched a series of adverts in national newspapers and across the web to spread the word and drum up support for the campaign. We know the British public have major concerns about these proposals and with your support we’re confident we can stop them.

If you want to help stop the Snooper’s Charter, check out our new No Snoopers’ Charter page on our website, which has a wealth of information about these proposals and what they could mean for your privacy. Here you can also chip in to keep the campaign going, and take actions to make sure these spooky proposals become no more than a bad nightmare.

Happy Halloween!
