Just security?

11 February 2012
Author: Shami Chakrabarti, Director of Liberty
Huge thanks to everyone who has already been in touch about Liberty’s forthcoming campaign against the proposals in the Government’s “Justice and Security” Green Paper. The document might have been better titled “Just Security” with a cover edged in black to mourn the passing of centuries of open justice and equality before the law.

You will recall that the proposals would allow future ministers to shut out the press, public and claimant from any court case in which a public hearing is thought “not in the public interest”.

This would include inquests into deaths in custody, compensation claims by ex-servicemen wounded by friendly fire, actions arising from complicity in torture or indeed any civil claim capable of causing embarrassment to powerful interests in our country.

The campaign will begin in earnest next Tuesday (14th February). So please return to this site on Valentine's Day.
