Executive Committee Member

Executive Committee Member – Candidate Brief – March 2024

Liberty is recruiting individuals to oversee its strategic direction, finances and senior management team, as Executive Committee (Board) members.

Founded in 1934, Liberty challenges injustice, defends freedom and campaigns to make sure everyone in the UK is treated fairly. We champion anyone whose rights come under threat, from Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities, to migrants, protestors, Government whistle-blowers and people under surveillance. We’ve grown to become the UK’s largest and most impactful civil liberties organisation, with more than 15,000 members and over 200,000 supporters.

If you share our values, we’d like to hear from you. You’d be joining a dedicated, committed organisation determined to protect human rights in the U.K.

We are looking for people who have previously undertaken senior leadership roles and especially those who have prior Board and/or governance experience, particularly in mission-driven, non-profit organisations.

We particularly welcome applications from people with lived experiences of marginalisation and/or disadvantage.

Additionally, skills in or experiences with some of the following would be highly beneficial:

  • equality, diversity and inclusion programmes and initiatives
  • fundraising and development in the non-profit sector
  • human resource matters
  • active legal practice in one or more of the areas of Liberty campaigns.

This is an unpaid, voluntary role, though reasonable expenses can be reimbursed.

Appointments are for one or two years and can be renewed at the Annual General meeting for a maximum period of eight years.

The Executive Committee meets at least six times a year. Members are also required to join a subcommittee to further the work of the organisation.  Meetings are usually online or hybrid, but in-person attendance at Liberty’s London offices for meetings or other events is occasionally required.

To apply for this role, please send a CV and cover letter of no more than two pages, outlining your relevant skills and experience, as well as your motivation, to hr@libertyhumanrights.org.uk.

Why work at Liberty?

Jun Pang, Policy and Campaigns Officer

“No two days at  Liberty are ever the same – it’s an incredibly exciting and interesting place to work, and I feel lucky to work with such brilliant people to try and change things for the better. My colleagues are kind, supportive, and generous – and they give me hope to keep defending human rights, but also to imagine and fight for a future in which we might all be able to flourish and thrive.”

Katharine Horgan, Philanthropy Officer

“I am so happy to work at Liberty in an organisation where absolutely everyone embodies the values that Liberty espouses. I feel incredibly lucky to work somewhere committed to anti-oppression, inclusivity and supporting staff welfare. I know that my manager has my back and I feel trusted to do my job how it works for me.”

Sam Grant, Advocacy Director

“I’ve been working at Liberty for almost 5 years now and I still feel energised by the people who work here every day. Everyone is committed, kind and invested in making the UK a better and fairer place for everyone to live in. The work feels important and the people you interact with and the impact you can have keeps you motivated. I feel lucky to work here.”

Matt Horwood, Communications Director

“The staff at Liberty are really passionate and thoughtful about not just making society a fairer place, but creating the most supportive and equal working environment for all its staff. I’ve learned a lot from colleagues – including and in particular the reps for our Staff Working Group – do excellent work to achieve this.”

Emmanuelle Andrews, Policy and Campaigns Manager

“It’s impossible to talk about Liberty without talking about the people. Liberty staff are smart, dedicated, and passionate, and it is genuinely an honour to be amongst them day-to-day. I learn something new every day here and have grown so much since joining as an Officer in 2020. I think we’re encouraged to reflect and move at the pace of trust, while also be fierce and take risks – all with an anti-oppressive lens. It’s with this collaborative, bold, and reflexive energy that we can put to work building alternatives towards a more just and caring world.”

Affinity Groups

Employee Relations Groups, or ERGs, are an important measure of commitment by employers to staff.

At Liberty our ERGs are called Affinity Groups and we currently have three. Our Staff of Colour Group, LGBTQ+ Group, and Disability Network.

The key focus for each group is to support staff, welcome new joiners and celebrate communities.

While Affinity Groups exist for their members, they also operate on an opt-in basis for wider consultations. This means that groups are supported in coming together to collectively respond to internal processes that impact staff, such as policy changes, if they choose.

All our Affinity Groups have a yearly budget and members have protected time off available to help them to organise or participate in group activities.
